James Orrock
1829 - 1913

Born in Edinburgh he was a successful dentist who became a professional painter and moved to 48 Bedford Square in London in 1866. He painted prolifically and collected too, soon becoming a noted connoisseur and developing a secondary career as an art dealer. He moved in the wealthiest circles and promoted the excellence of British art, particularly the art of watercolour. Lord Leverhulme bought most of his collection, as well as one thousand of Orrock's own paintings, in the early 20th Century and part of that collection formed the basis of the Lady Lever at gallery at Port Sunlight.
